Week of August 28th-September 4 in Lee HR

Another great week in 6th grade.  Look forward to being together in our meeting on Monday night, August 31 at 7:30 p.m. link for meeting coming from Room parents.

Three things….

We have begun watching World Watch News – which is the broadcast version of World Watch magazine that we have used for 20 years at Perimeter School.  I am previewing each morning and we watch and discuss.  I will not show your children anything that I would not show my own children. There have been a few national issues presented (rioting) that I have skipped over as I think these should be discussed at home.   We discuss and even pray from a Biblical world view.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  I am glad to send the link and my password.  We are all on the same team with this.   If you are uncomfortable with your child watching at school, please let me know.

Also, the students are LOVING Spanish with our own Mrs. McNair….she will update soon.  She’s awesome!

Also, please see Mr. DeMaris’s History class syllabus attached at end of newsletter as well as this link to help study for Geography.

Perimeter School Sixth Grade History

Ken DeMaris kdemaris@perimeter.org

Overall Purpose:

Since the history of man has a beginning and an end, students study history in a linear fashion, placing key men, women, and events on the timeline of history.  The history of the world and the nation are included in the sequence, with frequent integration of geography, science, and the literature of the period.  The fallenness of history is recognized not only in the consequences of man’s sin through the ages, but also in the current revisions of history used to promote personal agendas and to attempt to make God irrelevant in the past and present.  Ultimately, we teach history so that our children “would put their trust in God and would keep His commands,” (Psalm 78:7), recognizing His unfolding plan through the ages.

Curriculum:

We cover The Spanish/American War up to the present day (primarily the twentieth century) and learn the countries and capitals of Europe (1st semester) and Asia (2nd semester).

Example of People Studied:  Sargent York, Desmond Doss, Anne Frank, Louie Zamperini, Jim Elliot, Billy Graham, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ruby Bridges, Alan Shepherd, Neil Armstrong, President McKinley thru President Trump (including Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Ronald Reagan, etc.).

Students should be ready to learn and discuss serious subject matter including:

The KKK, The Holocaust, Presidential Assassinations, Wars, Civil Rights, and Abortion.

Students need to take neat notes for narrations and as a study guide for tests and quizzes.
